Pekingese,Shih Tzu Mix

Size: Small
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
ID:

Notes: Meet Nelly: This gorgeous girl was turned in by her owner into a kill shelter. How could anyone abandon a cutie pie like this?? Miss Nelly is a pekingese/shih tzu mix and is a major sweetheart. She loves to be where her humans are and is very quiet. She is 9 or 10 years young. She gets along fine with cats and dogs. She needs to be in a home with adults only. Nelly had a bladder stone when we first brought her home and had that removed. There is a possibility that one may return. We are feeding her a special diet to help reduce the chance. Nelly has lots of personality and will make someone the best companion. Please call her foster mom Diane at 804-752-2814 today.

Chubs will need a very special home. We are continuing to have testing done on Chubs. If you would like to donate to help with his vet bills, it would be very appreciated.

shih Tzu: breed

May 20, 2007

The Shih Tzu has been around for a long time. The Shih Tzu was bred to sit around the palace of the Emperor of China and bark when people or animals approached: this is allegedly to alert people to the presence of unwanted visitors. It is believed that this ornamental breed was created by breeding the Bei-jing gou (Pekingese) with a Tibetan dog breed, the Lhasa Apso. Recent DNA analysis confirms that this is one of the oldest breeds of dog. The Shih Tzu is also known as the Chinese/Tibetan Lion Dog or the Chrysanthemum Dog. It is called the chrysanthemum dog because its face looks very much like the flower. In 1994, the Shih Tzu became the 12th most popular breed of dog in the AKC’s 139 breeds with more than 37,000 new individuals.
James E. Mumford described the breed in an American Shih Tzu magazine, giving a picture of the versatile character of the Shih Tzu: “Nobody knows how the Ancient Eunuchs managed to mix together…And now here comes the recipe: A dash of lion, several teaspoons of rabbit, a couple of ounces of domestic cat, one part court jester, a dash of ballerina, a pinch of old man (Chinese), a bit of beggar, a tablespoon of monkey, one part baby seal, a dash of teddy bear and the rest dogs of Tibetan and Chinese origin.” e

Shih Tzu characterized by its long, flowing double coat; sturdy build; intelligence; and a friendly, lively attitude. In breeding all coat colors are allowed. The Shih Tzu’s hair can be styled either in a short summer cut, or kept long as is compulsory for conformation shows. Although Shih Tzu owners do not generally find fur on furniture or clothes, they do shed small amounts of fur, but are still considered to be a hypoallergenic pet. The shed hair is usually trapped in the Shih Tzu’s dense undercoat until the Shih Tzu starts to engage in activities that involve a lot of movement (e.g., running around.)
The American Kennel Club (AKC) Shih Tzu breed standard calls for the dog to have a short snout, large eyes, and a palm-like tail that waves above its torso. The ideal Shih Tzu to some is height at withers 9 to 10 1/2 inches. The dog should stand no less than 8 inches and not more than 11 inches tall. The Shih Tzu should never be so high stationed as to appear leggy, nor so low stationed as to appear dumpy or squatty. Regardless of size or gender, the Shih Tzu should always be solid and compact, and carry good weight and substance for its size range.

The life span of a Shih Tzu is 11-14 years[4], although some variation from this range is possible. Some health issues common among the breed are portosystemic liver shunt, renal dysplasia, and hip dysplasia- in Standard sizes. In addition, they also can suffer from various eye problems. Shih Tzus (and many other breeds) may present signs of allergies to red dye #40, and owners should respond to scratching in the absence of fleas by eliminating pet foods that contain this commonly used additive.

Shih Tzu

Size: Small
Age: Adult
Gender: Male

Notes: What a face! This little guy is very sweet and is looking for a forever home. Sully is 4 yrs old so still has many happy years to provide to his new owners. Sully would make a great addition for someone looking for a smaller dog and just wants a buddy to hang out with. Sully enjoys the company of other dogs and enjoys playing in the backyard with them. Sully is not for those families with small children. Those little hands are sometimes scary for dogs. This is Sully’s second time with us. He was originally given up because he growled at the small children. So future homes will be screened very carefully to ensure that Sully will not come into contact with small children. Since returning to rescue, we have had no incidents with Sully. Sully’s past problems have usually occurred around either his bed or the past owner’s bed. Sully is like many of us and likes to take his time getting up. (I can’t say that I blame him). We believe that Sully does best when he is a second dog because he just follows our other dogs outside and they are usually great at waking him up thus preventing any problems. Sully also enjoys playing with the other dogs in our backyard. So if you are looking for a friend for your dog or just a dog to hang out with, Sully may be it for you. If you have additional questions about this wonderful guy, please contact us at 540 752 1741. Information concerning the adoption process can be found at www.secondchancedog.com. Sully’s adoption fee is $250.00

Hello I’m Niko and I’m The King Of MY World!!! I’m a one year old pure bred Shih Tzu who has gone through Doggy School. I graduated at the top of my class. I know my commands and signs, however I’m still trying to learn to be obedient when someone tells me drop and leave things alone; I don’t quite understand why I’m being told to these things!! One of my favorite times of the week is bath time. I love the water and love having a bath. Now mind you, I’m a very health concious little chap; my favorite treats are carrots insted of doggie treats. I am a cuddle bug and I love to give kisses and give lots of affection to the right person. My mommy says I need to go to a home with calm children who are 6+. I am very friendly and I don’t mind socializing with other dogs
